BMW has reported to US federal safety investigators that on
frequent short motorcycle trips, especially in cold climates,
water can accumulate in the motorcycle’s oil tank. When
the engine is running, escaping water vapor can condense on
the oil tank’s air bleed valve. If the bike is in freezing
temperatures, the water might actually freeze and then it would
block the air bleed valve. If that happens, the pressure can
build up in the oil tank and that can cause the tank to rupture.
That can lead to oil leaking onto the rear tire. Oil on your
tires can make them slippery and cause can accident and accidents
on motorcycles can be extremely dangerous.
