Ford Recalls 3.8 Million Trucks and SUVs to Fix Cruise Control Switch that has caused Fires

Take the Lemon TestFord has issued a recall on an estimated 3.8 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles because of a faulty speed control deactivation switch that may cause engine compartment fires.

The recall involves some of Ford’s most profitable vehicles and covers the 1994 thru 2002 model years, Ford F-150, F-Series Supercrew trucks, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Bronco SUVs with cruise control. This recall is similar to one in January 2005 where Ford recalled about 792,000 pickup trucks and SUVs for speed control switch problems.

The federal government’s safety agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, started investigating the recalled Ford vehicles in early 2005 after getting dozens of consumer complaints about Fords that caught fire even when they were parked and the engine shut off.

Ford recall cruise control fireThe suspected defective switch is a $20 part that shuts off the cruise control and is attached to the brake master cylinder on one end and wired to the cruise control on the other end. The switch, on most models, is “hot” at all times and a thin “film” barrier is all that separates the flammable brake fluid from the switch’s electrical parts.

Problem is that when the thin film cracks, then the brake fluid seeps into the electrical side of the switch. Corrosion can set in. The electrical current heats up the part because of the corrosion and eventually a fire may erupt.

Other defects in these vehicles may also exist.
