Kia has announced it is recalling all model year 2002 thru
2005 Kia Sedona Ex models sold in the US because some electrical
wiring under the front seats was installed wrong and can
rub against metal parts and cause an electrical short-circuit
and possibly a fire. More than 74,000 potential Kia lemon
vehicles are involved in the recall.
Calling it a problem with wiring installation might be a
little misleading, however, since it does not really sound
as serious as the problem might be if it happens to you.
If the wire shorts out it will trip a circuit breaker that
could lead to a fire. Problem is that restarting the vehicle
can then reset the circuit breaker, causing the electrical
short to trip the breaker all over again. Kia has reported
to the federal government’s safety department that
as this process is repeated the breaker can build up heat
sufficient to cause “a fire in another component in
the junction box area.”
The problem first began to surface over a year ago, in 2004,
with reports that dashboard fires were occuring in Sedona
vehicles. As the fire reports piled up, Kia began looking
more closely at the problem. That lead to the preliminary
findings in March 2005 of the actual cause. It wasn’t
until October 2005 that this recall occurred.
