Ford Recalls 1.2 Million Trucks
for Stalling Danger
Do you own one of these diesel-powered potential lemon Ford
trucks?
- 1997 to 2003 Ford E Series van
- 1997 to 2003 Excursion sport
utility van
- 1997 to 2003 F-450 Super Duty
- 1997 to 2003 F-550 Super Duty
Well, Ford just recalled 1.2 million of them because of engine
stalling defects. Federal safety investigators say that the
camshaft position sensor on the engine can function intermittently
and lead to stalling and the danger of a crash.
The sensor regulates the fuel going into the engine and if
it doesn’t work right it can shut off the engine fuel — apparently
even while the engine is running!

According to a December 3, 2007 letter to federal investigators
from James Vondale in Ford’s Automotive Safety Office,
the sensor’s circuit can degrade over time “due
to sensor manufacturing process variation combined with a sensor
design that is overly sensitive to environmental factors and
manufacturing variability” which is engineering-speak
for the sensor can fail. Ford says it is unknown how many vehicles
are be affected by this defect.
Federal safety investigators have been investigating the defect
for almost two years. In spite of the dangerous nature of the
defect, the Ford letter to federal safety investigators says
that “Ford does not at this time plan to make a statement
to the media concerning the subject matter of this action.”
