Telemarketing is Fraud
Telemarketers love older folks. They’re always home
and they still trust people. But older people aren’t
the only victims of crooked telemarketers.
Promises of lottery prizes and contest winnings, are a common
telemarketing scheme. All you have to do is pay a small fee
or “tax” and, once they have your money, you
never hear from them again.

Oddly enough, most US telemarketing fraud happens with calls
made from Canada but also include calls regularly made from
Spain, England, Netherlands, Jamaica and Costa Rica. Government
estimates are that it costs US senior citizens over half
a billion dollars a year.
Tips to Protect You From Telemarketing Fraud
- Ask telemarketers for the name and address of their
company (if they are crooked, they’ll won’t
give it to you).
- Ask the caller to send you their offer
(or an explanation of it) in writing so you can read it
over and talk about it with your family and others.
- Ask
about the company's money back guarantee and refund policies
(make sure one exists).
- Before you spend any money, call
the Better Business Bureau, your state Attorney General's
Office, or the local Consumer Protection Service in the
state or city where the company is actually located, and
ask if any complaints have been made against them.
- Talk
to your family and friends, or call your lawyer, or see
your banker, and get their advice before you lose your
money.
- Tell the telemarketer to remove your telephone number
from their list, if you do not want to be called.
- Report
suspicious telemarketing calls, junk mail solicitations,
or advertisements to the National Fraud Information Center
at 1-800-876-7060.

Important Phone Scam Tips:
- Do not pay for any prize or send money to improve
your chances of winning – it
is illegal for someone to even ask you to pay
money just to enter a contest.
- Do not let anyone bully you
into buying something "right
now." If
they say that you have to make up your mind right now,
or "We must have
your money today," then it's probably a scam ripoff.
Don’t
do it!
- Do not give any caller your bank account number.
They can use it to steal money from your account without
you even knowing it!
- Do not give your credit card number
to anyone over the telephone, unless you are the one who
placed the call.
- You should never wire money or send money
by overnight delivery unless you want to give your money
away, because that is probably what you are doing!
