Kawasaki is recalling 29,559 Ninja model year 2004 EX 250 F18, EX 250 F18 L, model year 2005 EX250 F19, EX 250 F19 L, model year 2006 EX 250 F6F, EX 250 F6 FL, model year 2007 EX 250 F7 F, and EX 250 F7FL motorcycles.

Kawasaki had been receiving warranty claims for the leaking fuel tanks for almost 3 years. Federal safety officials apparently heard of it and, under federal law, “requested” Kawasaki to tell them what was going on. It took Kawasaki about 5 weeks to comply and then, just a few weeks later, the recall was announced. It didn’t take long for federal safety officials, who are responsible for requiring vehicles with safety defects to be recalled by the manufacturer, to call the defect what it was: dangerous.

The fuel tank may have been punctured or weakened during the manufacturing operation by a fairing mounting screw that was too long for the purpose. Also, the threads of the nut could have been damaged when workers were aligning the fairing with the tank during initial installation, or paint could have blocked the threads. In that case, in an effort to clean the threads, a tap was run into the nut. Kawasaki reports that because the depth of travel of the tap was not properly controlled, the tip of the tap may have punctured the outer surface of the tank.

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. A fire on a motorcycle is dangerous at any speed — or even just sitting still!

Not every Ninja motorcycle was recalled. Here’s the reported starting and stopping vehicle identification numbers of the recalled motorcycles:
