Nissan Recalls ‘03 Altima & Sentra Cars for Engine Shut Down Risk

Take the Lemon TestGot a lemon Nissan car or truck? Would you like a new one or your money back?

Nissan is recalling 200,000 2003 Nissan Altima and 2003 Nissan Sentra cars equipped with the 2.5 liter engine, because engine temperature fluctuations may cause the engine to suddenly shut down.

The affected 2003 Nissan Altima vehicles were produced from August 1, 2002 to September 2, 2003. The affected 2003 Nissan Sentra vehicles were produced from August 1, 2002 to march 25, 2003. Nissan’s investigation started in March 2006 when federal safety officials asked Nissan if engine stalls might be related to a December 2003 recall on Altima vehicles.

The operation of the “crank angle sensor” in the 2.5 liter engine is significantly affected by variations in temperature that can occur due to the unique location of the sensor in the engine. Under certain driving conditions, the variations in temperature can be large enough to interrupt the signal output from the sensor. Problem is, if the interruption in the signal is so brief that the car’s electronic control module does not have time to diagnose the condition, the engine may stop running without any warning.
