Toyota Prius Recall: Steering
System Danger
Got
a lemon Toyota Prius? Would you like a new one or
your money back?
Toyota has announced a world wide recall of the “second
generation” of its popular Prius hybrid car along with
other models using the same defective steering system, including
the Wish, Isis and other models.
The recall covers vehicles made between July 2003 and December
2005. Reportedly, steering parts can break or come apart
and the driver can lose control ... not a good thing on the
interstate highway at 65 mph.

Toyota says that the recall applies only to cars with power
steering. The fault lies in a steering shaft, which Toyota
says could crack if the steering wheel is turned forcefully
or if the car is driven onto the curbing while parking.
Toyota reports that the steering problem in the Prius is
likely to first appear as a rattle or knocking sound from
the steering gear.
According to the recall notice, Toyota says that “In
the worst case, if the vehicle continues to be operated under
these conditions, the steering connection may separate or
fracture, which could result in loss of steering.”

This million car recall dwarfs the first 2005 Prius recall
in March 2006, which only dealt with improper air bag system
assembly that could leave some air bags limp instead of inflating
properly. This one covers more models and more model years
by far.
